IDP: Individual Development Program 1 and 2

February 13-November 26, 2016

The IDP is directed at both experienced taiko players who wish to advance their technical and musical skills in playing taiko, shinobue, singing and dancing, and percussionists and drummers with little or no experience of taiko, but who have excellent rhythm and musicianship skills and who display potential to develop into taiko artists.

The program runs for 10 months (February-November) and demands a high level of commitment. There is an emphasis on ensemble playing, and as such, successful IDP candidates will take lessons together, working as a musical ensemble. There are two levels – IDP1 and IDP2 (see below for more information). Entry is by audition, which will be held on Sunday January 24, 2016.

What’s the difference between IDP 1 and IDP 2?

IDP2 is for those players who have completed IDP1 and wish to extend their study in taiko. Essentially, IDP2 entails the same commitment of time and energy as IDP1. However, IDP2 players will be expected to initiate, coordinate and lead ensemble rehearsals and to take responsibility in instilling high artistic standards.

The standards expected from successful IDP2 participants will be greater than those of the IDP1 people, even though they will be learning and playing the same things. Working as an ensemble and obtaining the best sound from that ensemble will be emphasised.
