In Schools education programs

Taikoz’s In Schools education programs are ideally suited to students interested in music, percussion, taiko drumming, languages and drama. Central to our In Schools program are Workshops In Schools and Concerts In Schools.

Workshops In Schools

Taikoz’s school workshops are completely interactive, providing a great introduction to the basics of taiko drumming. Taiko is very physical and our workshops assist in developing musical and listening skills through coordinated movement of the arms, legs and body. The workshop begins with warm ups, which lead into learning rhythmic patterns, followed by a short piece of music to play together at the conclusion.

Key areas of learning are:

  • Maintaining a beat
  • Sequencing and pattern-making
  • Developing aural memory, kinaesthetic awareness and physical coordination
  • Working together with others

During the workshop students will:

  • Learn stick grip
  • Learn how to strike the taiko
  • Learn various rhythmic patterns
  • Experience various styles of taiko drumming
  • Explore a range of movement and dance

And in the process…

  • Experience the awe-inspiring sound of the taiko
  • Have a good physical workout
  • Improve body awareness
  • Develop listening skills
  • Develop team spirit
  • Learn about the fascinating tradition of wadaiko
  • Have fun!

Concerts in schools

Taikoz has over 10 years experience in presenting schools concerts. Our program is 50 minutes in duration, features the taiko, Japanese bamboo flutes and voice, and includes contemporary Australian music, as well as contemporary and traditional Japanese music.

Audience participation is a popular feature of the concert, with numerous students chosen to come on stage and play with the ensemble.

The main elements of a Taikoz schools concert are:

  • New Australian music
  • Contemporary and traditional Japanese music
  • A range of musical concepts
  • An introduction to Japanese language and culture
  • Student participation

The program is tailored for Primary and Secondary students.

Taiko Club

Contact us about running a regular Taiko Club at your school. For students eager to take their music and taiko skills to the next level, our teachers come to your school at a regular, pre-determined time during school term. We can supply all equipment; all you need to provide is the room and the students!

Sessions run for 50 minutes and can be conducted either before or after school, during lunchtime or another suitable time. We recommend a maximum of 15 students for an enjoyable taiko club.

 Taikoz Taiko School

For those schools that are unable to establish a taiko club at their school but have eager students wanting to learn the taiko, we recommend joining one of our weekly taiko school classes held at our studio in Ultimo. Classes range from beginner to advanced, with specific youth classes, children’s classes and private lessons. For more information about our taiko school, please visit our Classes pages or contact our class coordinator

Fetes and gala days

Taikoz regularly performs at private functions and corporate events, and our performers are also available to play at your next school fete, Harmony Day or gala event. We welcome the opportunity to work with you in achieving a successful day. Our standard community rates apply for these types of school events.

If the opportunity arises, we can also involve our amateur student group, Taiko no Wa to perform for you, either independently or with Taikoz. Taiko no Wa members regularly attend our taiko school and some members have toured internationally and nationally with Taikoz. Our Artistic Director Ian Cleworth oversees Taiko no Wa’s rehearsals and performances.
